I love making my own nut milks because I know exactly what ingredients goes into them and like anything homemade, it’s just sooo much better than anything store-bought. In my opinion homemade nut milks always have a perfectly fresh taste and are extra creamy.

Many store-bought nut milks contain icky ingredients such as gums, fillers, lecithins, carrageenan, sugar and artificial flavorings. You can google each term to see the negatives of each, but the major one to look out for is carrageenan – this is a potentially carcinogenic (cancer-causing) ingredient and you should definitely steer clear of it in all products! It’s so disappointing to me that companies are aware of this and still include it in their nut milks. Even some of the proclaimed ‘clean’ nut milk companies aren’t actually so clean. I don’t want to call out any brands on here, but if you’re interested in knowing what NOT to buy, email or message me and I’d be happy to send you a list of these brands. I’d also be happy to make some recommendations about my approved, clean nut milk brands 🙂

Anyway, back to making your own nut milk! I used to be intimated by the process, but now that I know how easy it is I’ve been making my own all of the time and experimenting with different flavors: I’ve created many almond milks: cinnamon, vanilla and even chocolate. I also love homemade cashew milk and today took it to another level by making STRAWBERRY CASHEW milk! The flavor is dreamy and is especially perfect for use in oatmeal or smoothies. It will naturally sweeten your oatmeal and give it a strawberry flavor. Same with smoothies – just add some greens, nut butter and a banana to your smoothie and it basically tastes like a strawberry milkshake! I also enjoy just sipping on this milk on its own.

As mentioned, this nut milk is so simple to make so don’t be intimated by the process! I used to make nut milk in a blender and then strain it through a nut-strainer bag, but realized there’s a more simple way to make nut milk: using a juicer! You can skip the entire step of straining the nuts from a nut milk bag! I recently got a Hurom Juicer and am OBSESSED with it! It makes the entire process of making homemade nut milk an absolutely dream – almost too simple! I soaked the cashews in water overnight to soften them and in the morning simply added them into the juicer with the strawberries and some filtered water – THAT’S IT – fresh, creamy and amazing homemade strawberry cashew milk! This juicer is also really easy to clean.

If you don’t own a juicer  you can use a blender to make this strawberry cashew milk. Please refer to the notes in the recipe for instructions on making this milk using a blender.

If you end up making this strawberry cashew milk I’d love to hear what recipes you used it in. You can get so creative beyond using it for oatmeal and smoothies! It would also be amazing to bake with – I’m thinking muffins! Share your creations with me on Instagram by tagging me @leahsplate 🙂

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
Print It Pin It

  • 1 cup cashews (I use raw, organic cashews)
  • 1 cup organic strawberries with stems removed
  • Filtered water

  1. Place the cashews in an airtight container and cover with filtered water. Place in the fridge overnight (or for at least 4 hours) (this softens and activates the cashews, bringing out the full health benefits).
  2. After soaking the cashews for at least 4 hours (I soak mine overnight), drain the water and rinse the cashews.
  3. Place 4 cups filtered water, the soaked cashews and the strawberries into a bowl and turn on a juicer (I love my Hurom juicer).
  4. Slowly add the water, cashew and strawberry mixture into the slow juicer with a spoon and the nut milk will come out ready to consume.
  5. Store in a jar in the refrigerator for up to one week.

If you do not have a juicer you can blend the cashews and strawberries with 4 cups of filtered water. After blending, strain with a nut milk bag (use code leah10 for 10% off) and store in the fridge in a jar.
